Brilliant solution.

Elegant shell, robust core:

The paneling of the boutiques at Zurich Airport formed an interesting challenge for the Knauf Design surface experts.

After some experiments, a multi-layered special paint coating produced the solution:

An elegant shimmering shell that also complies with the strict safety regulations.

Result: Shining eyes - not only for the architect.

Project description

Elegant shell with a robust core: The wall cladding in the new terminal of Zurich Airport was an interesting challenge for the Knauf Design surface experts. While the sanitary facilities should be lacquered in dull black, the surfaces of the boutique walls were supposed to shine with a black mirror effect. Strict fire safety regulations also had to be fulfilled.

The first step was to try out. After some experiments including filing on both sides and several paintings of the gypsum fibre boards, the ultimate solution was finally accomplished: an elegant shimmering HPL outer skin – scratch-resistant with a non-combustible gypsum fibre core. Design and safety requirements fulfilled! After the same surface treatment, the walls of the sanitary areas were lacquered in dull black and the doors were doubled.

The whole project took three months. Wall designs of further floors are already being planned.
